Actually I think I’m a little worse-off.

 

 

For instance, my family really wanted me to get a degree when I was younger.

 

However, the uni fees, even at subsidized rates, were too expensive for us.

 

As a result, my mum had to pawn almost all her jewelry to chip in.

 

We also had to take loans.

 

Add that extra amount to the savings we had, and it was enough to pay for the 1st year of fees.

 

But what about the subsequent years?

 

We could barely afford the 1st year fees. How could we possibly find any money for the rest of the semesters?

 

I knew that I had to do something. Or my parents’ hopes and efforts would be cruelly dashed.

 

So in order to self-fund my uni fees…

 

You know what it’s like going to work after an exhausting day of classes?

Trust me…it did not feel good.

 

Classes start in the morning and typically end around late afternoon.

 

I’ll then head to work. Mostly as a waiter or shop assistant.

 

Whichever place needed part time workers, I would be there without fail almost every day.

 

As a result, my grades suffered.

 

It’s hard to study when you only get home at around 10-11pm, after a 12 hour grind of classes and work.

 

But the good news was that I saved enough to afford my year 2 fees, and just about scrapped through without flunking out!

 

Even so, I knew that something had to change.

 

I could not keep up this grueling routine any longer.

 

And so I did something even more drastic…

Some of my friends thought that my decision was a waste of my engineering degree.

 

But I don’t see it that way.

 

Because I was already making a decent income as a part-time financial consultant.

 

Surely I could make more doing it full time, compared to a regular engineering job, right?

 

Unfortunately, it was not so straightforward.

 

Being a full-time financial consultant was very different from part-time!

 

There were politics to deal with. Team leaders who did not really train me properly. “Frienemies” who would stab you in the back any chance they got.

 

In other words, I had to find a way to the top all by myself.

 

And so I utilized by tried-and-tested strategy:

 

Hard work. Dedication. Application.

 

Armed with that mentality, I slowly but surely carved out my own piece of success.

 

I even managed to get regular MDRT awards! (Million Dollar Round Table, which meant that I closed a significant amount of sales)

 

Most importantly, I’ve managed to give my family the quality lifestyle they deserve.

My achievements over the years were the springboard for the next stage of my career:

It seems strange that I can sum up my career in just a few words.

 

But the truth was that it took plenty of sacrifice, sleepless nights, sweat and tears to get to where I am today.
